Sri Lanka defeated England by 20 runs in a very exciting World Cup match at Headingley on Friday. Chasing the target of 233 runs given by Sri Lanka, the hosts were reduced to 212 in 47 overs.
This is the second win of Sri Lanka in this World Cup, while England’s second defeat. For England, Ben Stokes scored the highest number of unbeaten 82. Apart from them, Joe Root contributed 57 runs. Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga took four, while Dhananjaya de Silva got three and Isuru Udana took two wickets. Nuwan Pradeep got one wicket.
Earlier, Sri Lanka could not score a big score due to England’s bowling attack. Chasing a victory target of 232 runs set by the visitor, the host were all-out for 232 in the stipulated 50 overs. Experienced all-rounder Angelo Mathews (unbeaten 85) scored the most runs for Sri Lanka.
Apart from them, Avishka Fernando contributed 49 and Kusal Mendis contributed 46 runs. Jofra Archer and Mark Wood took three-three wickets on behalf of the host team. Adil Rashid two and Chris Woakes took one wicket.
Winning Team Inning
Sri Lanka’s did bat first after winning the toss but a beginning of visitor are very bad and the captain Dimut Karunaratne (1) returned to the pavilion only on the totals of three. He was caught by Archer at the hands of Jos Buttler. On this score, the visiting team got the second blow as a Kusal Perera (2).
Sri Lanka’s problems extended out when Perera out on Woakes’s ball. But the 59-run partnership between Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis handled Sri Lanka’s innings. Wood sent Fernando to the pavilion and gave the guest team the third blow.
After this, Mathews led the innings together with Mendis. Both shared a 71-run partnership for the fourth wicket which Rashid broke. Sri Lanka’s fifth wicket fell as Kusal Mendis on a total of 133. Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva shared 57 runs for the sixth wicket. However, both batsmen could not manage to score quickly. Jofra Archer raised Sri Lanka’s problems by sending the pavilion to Silva on his 29 private scores.
Archer also dismissed Thisara Perera (2) and closed all the way to reach the team’s big score. Isuru Udana scored only six runs and dismissed on Wood’s ball. Wood made Lasith Malinga third victim. They made Malinga clean-bowled. Apart from Mathews, Nuwan Pradeep remained unbeaten on one run.
Malinga Was The Hero Of The Team’s Victory
After this, England started chasing the target but Malinga was there and he sent back the pavilion to both of the openers of England. After a 50-runs partnership of Captain Morgan with Joe Root, Captain Morgan trapped on Udana’s ball.
After completing the half-century, Root was also caught out by Lasith Malinga’s ball at the hand of the wicketkeeper. He played 57 off 89 balls. After the exit of the Root, the start of the fall of the wickets did not stop till the end and England lost the match.
