Sri Lanka Defeats Afghanistan In Low Scoring Match

Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup in 2019 on Tuesday to open their account of victory. Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by 34 runs in the match played at Cardiff’s Sofia Gardens Stadium. Sri Lanka suffered a 10-wicket defeat against New Zealand in their first match, but this was Afghanistan’s second consecutive defeat.

In the rain-affected match, the Afghan bowlers all out Sri Lanka for 201 in 36.5 overs. When Sri Lanka made 182 on 8 wickets in 33 overs, it was raining. That’s why the match was over for 41 overs and Afghanistan got the target of 187 runs to win the Duckworth-Lewis rule.

However, the Afghan’s batsmen could not show the stiffness to Sri Lankan bowlers and the team was all-out by making 152 runs in 32.4 overs.

For Afghanistan, Najibullah Jadran (43) scored most runs. He hit six fours in his 56-ball knock. The Afghan team’s precarious condition can be judged by the fact that its six batsmen could not even touch the tenth figure.

Apart from Najibullah, Hajratullah Jajai (30), Gulbadin Naib (23), Mohammad Nabi scored 11 runs. Nuwan Pradeep took four wickets for Sri Lanka. Lasith Malinga took three wickets, Isuru Udana and Thisara Perera got a one-one wicket.

Earlier, the Sri Lankan team could not score a big score after the start of the match. The more runs scored by Sri Lanka, Kareena Perera (78) scored. He scored 8 boundaries in his 81-ball innings. Mohammad Nabi got four wickets for Afghanistan, Rashid Khan and Dawlat Zadran two and two while Hamid Hassan took one wicket.

Afghani spinner Mohammad Nabi show the way of the pavilion to the three batsmen in the same over and broke the hope of the Sri Lankan team.

Starting of Sri Lanka

Losing the toss and batting first, the Sri Lankan team started well. Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera, who came in to start the innings, shared a 92-run partnership for the first wicket. Both batted with ease and did not allow the Afghan bowlers to dominate.

Kusal Perera scored fast in comparison to Karunaratne. The partnership was getting dangerous with every over passing but Mohammed Nabi gave great relief to his team by making Karunaratne out on the first ball of the 14th over.
